Workshop: Less code, more results: a modern R workflow
Do you often find yourself writing scripts with dozens of lines that just repeat the same thing? Not sure what pipelines are, or how mutate() and map() work? After this workshop, that will be a thing of the past!
We will show you how to efficiently load and prepare data for analysis, then move on to transformation, creating subsets, and visualisation. And we won't stop at standard plots, we will introduce you to interactive visualisation using the plotly package, and if there is interest, we can also try building an interactive map with leaflet ! Towards the end of the workshop, we will cover functions like map() and map_df() , which allow you to iterate without for-loops. We will also touch on how to properly structure and comment your scripts, so your code stays readable and easy to share with others.
Of course, if you have any specific problems or topics you are unsure about, let us know. If possible, we will work them into the workshop, and if not, we can always look at it over a glass of good wine in the evening! The workshop is aimed at students and researchers working in RStudio. No experience writing your own functions is required, just a basic familiarity with the R environment and the motivation to learn something new.
- Wednesday, November 25, 2026, 14:00

Excursions
The excursions will take place on Friday, November 27, 2026, in the afternoon. You can choose from the following options:
The Kostelec nad Černými lesy Château (fee 200 CZK)
A guided tour of the castle’s historic rooms traces its architectural evolution, the history of prominent noble families, and its current use as part of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. Visitors will learn about the Smiřický family of Smiřice, the Liechtenstein family, and the castlee’s modern history as a center of higher education. The tour includes the castle church of St. Adalbert, the representative rooms of the north wing, the large Knights’ Hall with a view of the surrounding countryside, and a unique tour of the historic roof trusses.
The Arboretum in Kostelec nad Černými lesy (fee 200 CZK)
The program also includes a walking tour from the Kostelec nad Černými lesy Castle grounds through the picturesque Peklov Valley to the Arboretum of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences. The arboretum features a unique collection of native and introduced tree and shrub species from various parts of the world. In a relatively small area, visitors can view an exceptionally diverse collection of trees and shrubs used for teaching, research, and practical study of dendrology. The excursion is led by an expert guide, a dendrologist, who will introduce visitors to the most interesting species, their biological characteristics, origins, and uses. The combination of a pleasant walk through the natural surroundings of the Peklov Valley with an expert commentary at the arboretum creates a unique experience that will be appreciated by both experts and the general public.
The Lesárium exhibition (free)
The modern, interactive Lesárium exhibition presents the history, present, and future of forestry in the Czech Republic, while also highlighting the unique connection between university education, scientific research, and practical forest management. The exhibition introduces visitors to the significance of the Forests of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague as a unique university enterprise that connects student education, scientific research, and everyday forestry practice. It includes information on the historical development of forestry education, current research projects carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences CZU, and topics related to the adaptation of forest ecosystems to climate change.
